Yes, the rumors are true. New ruralism is in, conspicuous consumption is out. Victory gardens are in, chemical-saturated lawns are out. Homesteading is in, McMansions are . . . okay, okay, you get the idea. It’s a whole new (old) paradigm!
Even if you HAVEN’T taken the plunge into veggie gardening yet, no worries! It’s really never too late. You can still plant lots of things now — just check their “days to harvest” info and calculate how much time is left in your growing season. All the most-loved plants fall into the 50- to 75-day range (like tomatoes, peppers, beans, eggplants), though some gourds and melons take quite a bit longer, more like 120 days. You may have to forgo those till next year. Something to look forward to!

Truth be told it is a bit late to start from seeds (though technically not impossible, with a little effort), so a trip to your local nursery or garden center is your best bet. In fact, those sad-looking veggies are probably on sale and will perk up right away once safely tucked into the ground (or a proper container).
