Crispy, sour, salty, or sweet, pickles are a taste sensation. Whether you grew up with the store-bought variety or had a pickling recipe your parents handed down to you, there’s no better way to pass the time than by having your grandkids assist in transforming lowly cucumbers into tasty pickles. It’s a great activity for an overnight or multiple-day visit. If it’s a short weekend visit, the overnight recipe is the way to go. If you have a week together, choose the recipe that requires three days of pickling. The pickles will probably be a bit more sour-tasting, which many kids prefer.

Overnight Pickles

What you will need:

*2 cups water

*2 tbsp. kosher salt

*1 cup vinegar

*2 lbs. Cucumbers (smaller, Kirby-style work best)

*3 or 4 cloves garlic

*Handful fresh dill weed

1. In a large pot, bring the water, salt, and vinegar to a boil and let it simmer as you prepare the cucumbers.

2. Wash the cucumbers and cut them into halves lengthwise.

3. Place the cut cucumbers in a large bowl. Add garlic and dill, then pour the vinegar mixture over the cucumbers.

4. Let the cucumbers cool to room temperature, then cover and refrigerate them overnight.
