Well, today is the day that many have been waiting for…the release of the highly anticipated follow-up to a NY Times Best Seller. Today is the day that Quirk releases Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. (I bet you thought I was gonna say The Lost Symbol. Well, that’s out today too and I guess there’s been a little hype about its release.) In honor of this momentous occasion, I present Stuff Every Man Should Know…about Sea Monsters.
By definition, a sea monster is a mythical sea-dweller. They can range in size, but have you ever been scared by a 1 inch tall sea monster? So, yeah, they are typically believed to be very large.
Legendary sea monsters include:
- Leviathan: a sea monster included in the Bible–though many believe it actually refers to a giant whale
- Loch Ness Monster: first sighted in 1933, it is believed that this monster inhabits Loch Ness in Scotland.
- The Hydra: a multi-headed sea monster
- Sirens: bird-women that used song to seduce and shipwreck sailors
- Mermaids: typically believed to be harmless, these half-human, half-fish creatures have been known to cause harm to sailors
- Cthulhu: a cosmic entity with tentacles as part of its face
Some helpful resources and items:
- How to escape from a Giant Octopus
- Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters - Chapter One
- How to crochet a Cthulhu
- Field Guide to Seafood (hehehe)
There you have it. Pick up a copy of Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters (and The Lost Symbol, as I hear a giant squid plays a major role in that book, as well). Sit back, relax, and enjoy some great mash-up literature.

What, no Champ? Granted he’s more a “lake” monster than a sea monster - but still, Nessie’s cousin and all…..
