Moscow Mule

And to think we once feared the Russians and their crazy command economy! That all started to change in the 1940s, when we first started to assimilate their national spirit, vodka, into our cocktails. John G. Martin of Heublein Inc., a food and beverage distributor best known as the company that brought A1 Steak Sauce to the world, was the marketing wizard who first came up with the idea of mixing clear, flavorless vodka with tasty, fizzy ginger beer to create a Russian-inspired libation with an American barnyard kick. Soon even New York City society matrons were “pouring Mules like pink tea and giggling like co-eds,” according to influential tastemaker Clementine Paddleford. America’s love affair with vodka had begun-and by God, as long as there are underage kids and closet alcoholics looking to sneak drinks out of water bottles, it’ll never end. For a truly authentic experience, serve this over cracked ice in a copper mug emblazoned with a hammer and sickle.

Ingredients

Ginger Beer
