January 4: New Year, New You — Paint a Room!

Interior surfaces that can be painted include walls, ceilings, and trim, including doors and windows. In each case, the surface must be prepared for application of the paint to optimize product adhesion and longevity. To prepare most surfaces for paint requires repairing and cleaning.

To repair surfaces before painting:

[ 1 ] Identify all surface imperfections on walls, ceilings, and trim within the selected room(s). Apply a small piece of masking tape on or near the imperfection for easier identification and removal when done.

[ 2 ] Use a putty knife or pointed object to remove any loose wall material. As needed, carefully hammer protruding wallboard nails to below the wall surface. If necessary, use joint compound to reattach loose wallboard tape that covers the seams between wallboard sheets.

[ 3 ] For smaller holes and dents, apply spackling following manufacturer’s instructions (on the container). Drying time typically is 30 minutes.

[ 4 ] For larger damage, apply wallboard or plaster patch (depending on the type of wall) and patch following manufacturer’s instructions. Two coats may be required and the drying time may be longer.

EXPERT TIP: Wallboard patch kits that include fabric and patch material are available at hardware stores. Select the size and type (wall or ceiling) required to make the repair and follow manufacturer’s instructions.
