Hook ‘Em Up: Crochet Basics

Crochet patterns use abbreviations for stitches and directions. This shorthand tells you what stitches to make when. Many of the directions also come with a chart that communicates visually what the directions say to do. The chart uses symbols for each stitch; for example, a chain stitch is an oval and a single crochet is a small “X.” The boxes below give you all the abbreviations in this book as well as the corresponding symbol used in the patterns.

The patterns in this book also use brackets [ ] to indicate a group of stitches to be made all at once or to be repeated a certain number of times. Parentheses ( ) are used within brackets to further set off stitches. Curly brackets { } at the end of a line indicate the number of stitches you should end up with.
