How to Make Yourself Levitate

You didn’t listen when the neighbors told you not to take the kids to the new fantasy movie-now they won’t get out from under the covers of your bed. Well, there’s only one way to allay their fears. With this nifty trick, you can prove to your kids that you have more magical powers than the Wicked Witch of the West.

What They See
You are standing directly in front of your kids. You slowly raise your arms out to your sides as your feet lift off the floor. Your feet come several inches off the ground, and now you seem to be rising in the air, without any apparatus, with no strings attached!

What You’ll Need
Just the right amount of showmanship

What You’ll Do
This illusion is best performed one on one. Angles are very important here: What actually happens is that you are creating an illusion of rising off the floor when in fact one foot comes off the floor about 4 inches and the other is on tiptoe. This feat is best performed while wearing a comfortable pair of thick-soled sneakers.

1. Stand facing your spectator in a slightly angled position-so that your right leg is pointing slightly toward your spectator’s right shoulder- with your arms at your sides and your feet together.
2. Keep your right leg stiff and straight.
3. Now shift your weight to your left foot as you slowly lift your right foot, which remains parallel to the floor at all times.
4. At the same time, your left foot goes into a tiptoe position. To your spectator’s eye, both feet appear to be levitating, as your heels come into alignment.
5. As you are lifting, slowly bring your arms out to your sides to help you retain “balance” and add to the illusion. A truly uplifting experience!
