General Description: This pattern uses slip stitches with the yarn held on the right side to create a flat fabric with compact, intertwined patterning-its compact texture resembles its namesake, the ancient textile woven from flax thread.

Properties: This reversible fabric with its fine cross grain is not immediately identifiable as knitting, especially when knit at a fine gauge. Denser than woven stitch due to working the slip-stitches on every row, the stitch also resembles linen in its preblocking stiffness.

Yarn Consumption: A slip-stitch variation of stockinette, this pattern uses approximately the same amount of yarn.

Suggested Uses: The stitch’s inelasticity makes it more suitable for carefully fitted garments or kitchen and bath linens. With the wider availability of flax fibers, this pattern-worked in linen yarn and edged with lace or other woven patterns-would make decorative, durable, and highly absorbent hand towels.

One Response to “How to Knit: Linen Stitch”

  1. Heidi Says:

Is there a similar stitch that looks the same on both sides? I really appreciate the front.

Thanks in advance for any input.
