For most of us, the rules of proper behavior during a hotel stay are pretty much commonsensical. But every now and then, you may find yourself with the bad luck to be stuck next door to a room that never sleeps. Who knows what they’re doing on the other side of that wall? The TV’s blaring, people are shouting at one another, and the headboard is knocking against the wall. This is a vacation? You can’t even think straight much less get any sleep.
The best solutions:
• Inform the front desk of the problem. Ask to speak with the manager if the clerk on duty says he can’t do anything about it. Politely remind the manager that you are a paying customer and expect to be treated as a valued guest.
• Find a blunt instrument in your room-the toilet plunger, a lamp-to knock against the wall. Now knock it sharply against the wall. (This is the universal language for “Shut up in there.”)
