Yep, we have our newest favorites, but that doesn’t mean I don’t occassionally love to look back at some of my favorite Quirk backlist titles.
I love to eat. I love to cook. I love to camp. I couldn’t make it 3 days on pork and beans. Yuck! Plus, these days, there’s a fresh awareness of what we’re eating. In light of that, I turn to Campfire Cuisine for summer yummies. This book is unassuming, yet useful. No, it doesn’t have tons of flashy, glossy pictures of food. But it’s small and portable, and chock full of useful information for planning meals for your car-camping trip (that’s being near an ice supply and having your cooler). Browse through the beginning for advice on equipment, safety, and details of camp cooking that you’ll want to know in preparation for your trip. It’s so easy to prepare things before you go! And, in the case your trip is rained out, the book gives you adaptations for home cooking.
A couple of years ago, I decided to put our little book to the test by prepping a few things beforehand: Mojo Chicken and Foil-Baked Yams with Spicy Chili Butter. Good thing I prepped the Lemony Couscous Salad, too, because it took us a long time to light our fire, and we ate that as an appetizer. I was very proud (too proud?) that everyone raved about my skills. Since then, I’ve tried quite a few things. Most recently, I made the Black Bean Salad and the Hot and Spicy California Grilled Cheese. Yum! There are even breakfasts and desserts.
Ditch the pork and beans. Save that for emergencies! This is also a great gift for your food snob friends who also love to camp!

I love this cookbook - and not just for camping! It’s a great go-to for quickie apps and sides for the hostess on the run. I’ve made a few of the salads and “midafternoon munchies.” Try the roasted garlic — but only if you’re not planning to kiss someone later!
